Teachers read and recorded chapters for our closed-circuit TV system
Writes Leola LeHew, library media specialist at Belleview (FL) Middle School:
Doug Wilhelm was the first author to visit our school, and the response among our faculty, staff and students to his visit was more than we could have hoped for. The Revealers was our first school-wide read -aloud and was part of our anti-bullying campaign. Teachers read and recorded chapters that were aired on our closed circuit TV system so students could read and follow along. Teachers also involved the students in literacy discussions, activities and projects.
Doug spoke in two assemblies about his life as a writer and the reasons why he wrote The Revealers. Our students responded enthusiastically to him and were totally involved in his presentation, which he easily geared to the different age groups he was addressing. Students had many questions for him, and Doug let them know he was truly interested in what they had to say.
We had a full day planned for Doug, and he eagerly participated in all activities - including a reception, book signings, luncheon for trivia contest winners, judging a schoolwide door-decorating contest and speaking to the school in an afternoon call-in show.
Doug's visit has set the standard for future author visits. We appreciated how involved he was in everything we planned and know that his visit will be remembered for a long time by our faculty, staff and students.
